Paläozoologie

Erforschung der vorzeitlichen Tierwelt

Die Paläozoologie als wesentlicher Teilbereich der Paläontologie (der Lehre von den Lebewesen der erdgeschichtlichen Vergangenheit) befasst sich mit den Fossilien, die ehemaligen tierischen Lebewesen zugeordnet werden können. In der Sektion Paläozoologie der SNSD spielen neben dem Benennen und Zuordnen (Taxonomie und Systematik) auch Fragestellungen rund um die Evolution der Organismen und Lebensgemeinschaften sowie die Veränderung der Lebensräume in Zeit und Raum eine sehr wichtige Rolle. Denn fossile Organismen geben ganz entscheidende Informationen über die erdgeschichtlichen Veränderungen unseres Planeten, z.B. Änderungen im Klima und der Paläo-Biodiversität.

Die wichtigsten Forschungsobjekte der Sektion Paläozoologie sind Makro-Invertebraten, d.h. relativ großwüchsige, wirbellose Tiere wie z.B. Muscheln, Schnecken und Ammoniten, die einen großen Teil der Paläo-Biodiversität der Erde reflektieren. Darüber hinaus stellen diese die besten Fossilgruppen für hochauflösende, relative Altersdatierungen (Biostratigraphie) und sie besitzen zudem recht gut bekannte Umwelt-Präferenzen (z.B. für die Temperatur und die Salinität). Sie sind somit verläßliche Zeugen und wichtige Archive des vergangenen globalen Wandels sowie hervorragende Werkzeuge in der Paläoumwelt-Rekonstruktion.

Zeitlicher Fokus der Forschungen ist das Mesozoikum (= Erdmittelalter: ca. 250-65 Mio. Jahre vor heute), insbesondere die mittlere Kreidezeit, eine intensive Treibhauswelt mit einem um ein Vielfaches höheren Kohlendioxid-Gehalt als heute. Marin abgelagerte Sedimentgesteine und deren fossiles Inventar sind wertvolle Archive dieses bewegten erdgeschichtlichen Zeitintervalls und ihre Analyse erlaubt es uns, die Funktionsweise von Paläo-Ökosystemen unter den Bedingungen eines extremen Treibhausklimas zu verstehen und die Veränderungen der Paläo-Biodiversität in Zeit und Raum an ausgewählten Organismengruppen zu verfolgen. Der vergangene globale Wandel kann auch ein Schlüssel für das Verständnis möglicher Zukunftsszenarien unseres Planeten Erde sein:

Die Analyse und Rekonstruktion sowie das funktionelle Verständnis komplexer mesozoischer Ökosysteme erfordert einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, der die klassische Paläontologie (Taxonomie und Systematik) und Sedimentgeologie mit den Methoden moderner (Isotopen-)Geochemie, quantitativer Paläoökologie und der höchstauflösenden, integrierten Stratigraphie kombiniert. Hierbei spielen auch die umfangreichen, z.T. historischen Sammlungsbestände der Sektion eine zentrale Rolle, die konservatorisch intensiv betreut und durch Neuaufsammlungen beständig vergrößert werden. Viele aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse beziehen sich auf die Paläo-Biogeographie, Paläoökologie und Biostratigraphie kreidezeitlicher Invertebraten sowie ihrer Lebens- und Ablagerungsräume (s. Publikationen). Regionale Schwerpunkte bilden Zentraleuropa (Deutschland, Tschechien, England, Spanien), Nordafrika (Ägypten) und der Mittlere Osten (Iran). Erfolgreich abgeschlossene DFG-Projekte befassten sich mit mutmaßlich glazio-eustatisch gesteuerten Meeresspiegelschwankungen in der mittleren Kreidezeit und deren Signifikanz für die Dynamik von Treibhausklimaten sowie mit Plankton-Benthos-Koppelungsmustern im spät-kretazischen Schreibkreidemeer (s. Forschung). Ein aktuelles DFG-Projekt beleuchtet die an-aktualistische Genese des autigenen Minerals Glaukonit vor dem Hintergrund kreidezeitlicher Umweltbedingungen/Paläogeographie und zeigt, dass die Gegenwart nicht immer der Schlüssel zur erdgeschichtlichen Vergangenheit ist.
