GEANS

Genetische Hilfsmittel für die Untersuchung der Gesundheit von Ökosystemen angewendet im Gebiet der Nordsee


Das Projekt GEANS wird vom Interreg North Sea Region Program 2014-2020 finanziert und ist eine transnationale Zusammenarbeit von neun Partnern aus sieben Ländern im Gebiet der Nordsee (Belgien, Niederlande, Großbritannien, Deutschland, Dänemark, Schweden und Norwegen). GEANS strebt, in Zusammenarbeit mit Interessensvertreter*innen, die Einführung von DNA-basierten Hilfsmitteln in Programmen zum routinemäßigen Monitoring an, um die Politik und Entscheidungsfindung in Bezug auf die Gesundheit des Ökosystems in der Nordsee-Region zu unterstützen.

Die Verwendung von DNA-basierten Werkzeugen könnte die Kosten für das gesetzlich vorgeschriebene Monitoring um 40% reduzieren, während die Bearbeitungszeit sogar um 60% sinken könnte. Um dies zu erreichen, beinhaltet GEANS sechs Arbeitspakete (work packages) mit jeweils individuellen Zielen. Das erste Arbeitspaket (WP1) strukturiert und managet GEANS organisatorisch, finanziell und sichert einen reibungslosen Arbeitsablauf zwischen den WPs und dem beigeordneten Sekretariat. WP2 zielt auf eine Synchronisation mit anderen Initiativen ab, um die Verwendung von DNA-Hilfsmitteln zu fördern, das Engagement von Interessensvertretern im Verlauf von Pilotstudien zu vergrößern und die Verwirklichung des Projekts im Management der Ökosytemgesundheit zu unterstützen. Im dritten Arbeitspaket (WP3), wird an der Einrichtung einer verlässlichen Referenzbibliothek aus DNA-Sequenzen gearbeitet, die auf eine Sammlung aus taxonomisch validierten Tieren beruht. Das Ziel von WP4 ist die Optimierung und die Standardisierung von DNA-basierten Feld- und Laborprotokollen. Innerhalb von WP5 ist eine Reihe von Pilotstudien in enger Zusammenarbeit in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Interessensvertretern organisiert, um die genetischen Protokolle in existierende Umweltbewertungen und das Management einzubauen. Die Pilotstudien wenden DNA-basierte Methoden in Monitoring Programmen im Kontext der europäischen Natura 2000 Richtlinien und der Meeresstrategie-Rahmenrichtline an, außerdem für die Erfassung nicht einheimischer Arten. Abschließend, zielt das sechste Arbeitspaket (WP6) darauf ab, die Ergebnisse von WP3, WP4 und WP5 in ein Rahmenkonzept für die Entscheidungsfindung einzubetten, als Hilfe die richtigen Protokolle für Echtzeit-Bewertungen zu finden und um die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse in klare und einfache Indikatoren und Management-Produkte umzusetzen.

Prof. Pedro Martinez Arbizu (verantwortlich für WP3), Prof. Ingrid Kröncke, Dr. Magdalini Christodoulou, Frau Kerstin Thaler und Frau Marie Elisabeth Kaufmann vertreten Senckenberg innerhalb von GEANS. Senckenberg koordiniert das Arbeitspaket für die Entwicklung zuverlässiger DNA-Barcode Referenz-Bibliotheken für die benthische Makrofauna in der Nordsee-Region für die Verwendung im Monitoring und für Folgenabschätzungen (WP3). Zusammen mit den anderen Teilnehmern von GEANS, aber auch mit Interessensvertretern, wird eine Liste von Schlüsselarten der Nordsee zusammengestellt, die mehr als 800 Arten umfasst, von denen mehr als 100 nicht einheimisch sind. Um COI-Sequenzen und die begleitenden Metadaten jedes Tieres (z.B. Fotos, Voucher-Code, Lokalität, Koordinaten, Datum) zu gewinnen, wird ein standardisierter Arbeitsablauf für Feld und Labor verwendet.

Außerdem beteiligt sich Senckenberg an WP5, mit zwei Fallstudien im Soft-Bottom Monitoring Pilot (Weichboden) und einer Fallstudie im Non-Indigenous Species Monitoring Pilot (nicht einheimische Arten). Beide Pilots streben einen Vergleich der Morphologie-basierten Analyse mit der DNA-basierten Analyse an und ob sie dieselben Informationen und Muster zeigen, die für die Bewertung der Ökosystemgesundheit der Nordsee verwendet werden können. Die erste Fallstudie im Soft-Bottom Monitoring Pilot ist eine Langzeit-Probenahmestelle in der Nähe der Insel Norderney, an der Senckenberg eine 40-jährige Zeitreihe besitzt (Teil von Senckenbergs Long Term Ecological Research North Sea Benthos Observatory), einer der wenigen benthischen Langzeit-Untersuchungsstandorte in der Nordsee und weltweit. Die zweite Fallstudie im Soft-Bottom Monitoring Pilot wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Landesbetrieb für Küstenschutz, Nationalpark und Meeresschutz, Schleswig-Holstein durchgeführt und ist ein Monitoring-Standort der Meeresrahmen-Richtlinie zwischen Helgoland und Sylt. Die Fallstudie im Non-Indigenous Species Pilot wird im JadeWeserPort, Wilhelmshaven, an einem Standort für das Monitoring von nicht-einheimischen Arten in Kooperation mit dem Bundesamt für Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie durchgeführt.

GEANS strebt, in Zusammenarbeit mit Interessensvertretern, die Einführung von DNA-basierten Hilfsmitteln in Programmen zum routinemäßigen Monitoring an, um die Politik und Entscheidungsfindung in Bezug auf die Gesundheit des Ökosystems in der Nordsee-Region zu unterstützen.
