From ancient herbals to modern information hubs – research and applications on the flora of Germany
Herbaria are among the oldest parts of the collections in natural history museums. Senckenberg’s oldest herbarium, a showpiece bound in the fashion of a herbal book, dates back to the year 1677. In the course of digitization, our collections are not only brought to a broader public’s attention, they also garner new scientific interest.
Beginning in the early 19th century, natural history collections have been designed and systematically extended with an eye on scientific questions. Over time, they underwent changes; generally, the requirements regarding research collections have become increasingly more diverse.
Research on and with herbaria
While the traditional herbarium specimen still constitutes the centerpiece of our work, the classic methods of examination with a magnifying glass or the microscope have been augmented by new methods such as DNA analyses and Xray studies. Besides taxonomic issues, our interest today also includes applied aspects such as nature conservation, where changes in the flora in connection with climate or land use change are of particular concern.
At the research locations in Frankfurt, Görlitz, Weimar, and Wilhelmshaven, the Herbarium Senckenbergianum maintains large collections pertaining to the German flora. Our work emphasizes basic research regarding systematics and evolution, including species groups such as hawkweeds, grasses, or most recently, the rose family. An important applied aspect in this regard is the pre paration of identification keys, particularly for taxonomically difficult groups. In addition, floristics, i. e., the recording and documentation of the occurrence of important species, constitute a central task. In this context, herbarium specimens continue to be the most reliable vouchers, which can be traced back over centuries.
Virtual herbaria and botanical online portals
In the course of digitization, the fields of identification aids and floristics have experienced a strong upsurge at Senckenberg. As early as 2010, Senckenberg started to operate the “Flora of Frankfurt” online portal, where interested citizens can report their observations of plants within the urban district as well as querying information. Görlitz also has a central contact point for regional floristics. Here, observation data are available via the local citizen science network, the working group of Saxonian botanists, and the responsible state office. As an important reference, Senckenberg Görlitz recently launched the “Virtual Herbarium of Lusatia.” It contains reliably identified specimens of all taxa that occur in Upper Lusatia (i. e., species, subspecies, and occasionally also varieties) in the form of high-resolution photographs – available to anyone at no cost. This is the first completely illustrated online flora for a region in Germany.
Online help even in difficult cases
With two out of four editors, Senckenberg also plays a key role in the continued publication of the “Rothmaler.” The “Excursion Flora of Germany” is likely the most comprehensive work for identifying the local plant life. The identification keys in the “Rothmaler” are considered the standard authority, especially in regard to difficult species groups. Nevertheless, in these taxonomically critical groups the comparison with identified material from herbaria continues to be necessary. While it was required in the past to personally visit large herbaria to achieve this, it can now be done from a home computer. Moreover, Senckenberg also operates a specialized online flora for hardtoidentify groups in close cooperation with the Haussknecht Herbarium at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. The online flora offers detailed photographs of identificationrelevant characteristics in addition to a virtual herbarium. In another online portal the chromosome numbers of plants of the German flora are presented. This portal was launched in 2015.
In view of the biodiversity crisis, offerings such as these gain increasing importance; therefore, we continually expand our digital resources. Those not content with simply looking at their computer screen are still welcome to visit our collections. The herbarium voucher specimens will continue to maintain their “real” value for basic research and environmental issues.
