Marine Invertebrates II

Research

Research in the section is focused on taxonomy, systematics, morphology and zoogeography of Polychaeta , especially on Aphroditoidea, Glyceridae , Magelonidae and Serpulidae (Research Field 1: Biodiversity, Systematics and Evolution).

The Mediterranean Sea, the Arabian Peninsula, the South China Sea and the South Atlantic are currently geographic areas of main interest. During the past ten years the section has participated in a number of national and international research projects in various geographic areas:

  • North Sea: Mapping the epizoobenthos of the North Sea
  • MARSAMM: Historische Sammlungen mariner Organismen – ein Fenster in die Anfänge von Global Change in Nord- und Ostsee. Funded by BMBF initiative „Vernetzen – Erschließen – Erforschen. Allianz für universitäre Sammlungen“.
  • Mediterranean Sea: Biodiversity of the deep benthos of the eastern Mediterranean Sea (METEOR-cruise 25 leg 1 and 40 leg 3)
  • Red Sea: Comparative Ecological Analysis of Biota and Habitats of the Sudanese Red Sea
  • Red Sea Biodiversity Project (Cooperation with King Abdulaziz University Jeddah
  • The Gulf: Establishment of a marine Sanctuary for the Gulf Region
  • Indian Ocean: Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity of Socotra Archipelago, P.R. Jemen
  • Pacific/Atlantic: Polychaeta of hot vents and cold seeps of the Pacific and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge
  • South Atlantic: Latitudinal gradients of biodiversity in the deep Atlantic (METEOR-cruise 48 leg 1; Projekt DIVA)
  • South China Sea: Biodiversity of marine Biota of the Island of Hainan, P. R. China

Specific projects on systematics of Polychaeta :

  • Revision of the Glyceridae
  • Morphology and diversity of the Sternaspidae
  • The polychaete fauna of  Northwest Madagascar
  • Revision of the Magelonidae from European waters
  • Revision of the Aphroditoidea of the Mediterranean Sea including ecological and biogeographic  aspects
  • Revision of the Aphroditoidea of the Arabian Peninsula including ecological and biogeographic  aspects
  • Revision of the genus Harmothoe (Aphroditoidea: Polynoidae) and morphologically similar genera
  • Diversity and taxonomy of Polygordiidae
