Bryozoans, Polyzoa or Moss Animals represent a phylum of colonial aquatic suspension feeding animals. Currently, 6,500 living and 15,000 fossil species are known to science.
Bryozoans are abundantly present in the marine realm, and in certain freshwater habitats. Basic research on bryozoan taxonomie has relevance for a variety of applied subjects such as pharmaceutical biology, fouling communities, neozoan invasions, pollution indication, and climate change.
The Section Marine Evertebrates III of the Senckenberg Research Institute houses a wide-ranging collection of bryozoans from the North Sea, the Mediterranean, the Arabian seas. the East Asian coastal seas (Philippines, Japan, Hainan/China), the Southern Ocean (New Zealand, Australia), and Antarctica.
