The Senckenberg Mission: Natural research as “medicine for the Earth.”
To use the Earth and its natural resources wisely and responsibly, we need to turn the study of nature into a kind of “medicine for the Earth”—aimed at understanding the entire “Earth–Human System” and its complex dynamics as a whole. Our research and outreach focus on the interactions between the geosphere and biosphere, the hydrosphere and atmosphere, and on how the human-made and human-influenced environment (the anthroposphere) operates within this system. We have long known that an intervention in one place can have far-reaching effects on other regions—or even on global processes. This is why, together with our national and international partners, we work to investigate and assess the potential impacts of human activities on nature, so that we can provide recommendations for a “healthy” relationship with our planet.
