Manganknollen und die Schätze in der Tiefe


Manganknollen aus der Tiefsee sind in der Industrie heiß begehrt. Aber wie wird sich ihr Abbau auf die Tiefseefauna auswirken?

Es ist eine lange Reise in die Tiefe. Im Scheinwerferlicht des Videoschlittens glitzern winzige Schwebeteilchen, bis er endlich, vier Kilometer unter der Oberfläche, den Meeresboden erreicht hat. Wie eine exotische Pflanze reckt sich ein kugelförmiger Schwamm an seinem Stiel nach oben. Langsam zieht der Videoschlitten über ihn hinweg. Schlangensterne kommen ins Sichtfeld, halb im graubraunen Tiefseeton verborgen. Es ist wie das Fenster zu einer fremden Welt.

Bodenschätze der besonderen Art 

Lange Zeit wurde die Tiefsee für eine unterseeische Wüste gehalten, in der nur wenige Tiere überleben können. Tatsächlich aber ist die Biodiversität in den Tiefseeebenen enorm, und noch immer sind über 90 % der Arten nicht beschrieben. Trotzdem zieht noch etwas anderes die Menschen in die Tiefsee: die sogenannten Manganknollen, kartoffelgroße, pechschwarze Agglomerate, die verstreut auf dem Meeresboden liegen. Die Knollen enthalten einige für unseren
Alltag wichtige Metalle wie Kupfer, Kobalt, Gold, Indium, Germanium und natürlich Mangan. Wir halten sie täglich in Form von Smartphones, Tablets
oder Digitalkameras in unseren Händen.

Entdeckt wurden die „polymetallischen Knollen“ bereits im Jahre 1873, aber erst steigende Rohstoffpreise brachten sie der Menschheit zurück ins Gedächtnis. Da diese Knollen hauptsächlich außerhalb der ausschließlichen Wirtschaftszonen der meisten Länder vorkommen, darf kein einzelner Staat über ihren Abbau bestimmen. Zum Schutz der Tiefsee wurde im Jahr 1982 die Internationale Seebodenbehörde (ISA) gegründet. Die ISA regelt alle Anliegen des Tiefseebergbaus in internationalen Gewässern. Unter anderem vergibt sie Lizenzen für Gebiete zur Erforschung eines möglichen Manganknollenabbaus in der Clarion-Clipperton-Bruchzone und im zentralindischen Tiefseebecken.

Lebenraum Tiefsee – Ein sensiblees Ökosystem

Während sich die Lizenznehmer hauptsächlich für die Manganknollen interessieren, erforschen wir von Senckenberg die Lebensgemeinschaften und die Diversität der Tiere in den betroffenen Gebieten. Dazu gehören nicht nur die großen Organismen der Megafauna wie Schwämme und Stachelhäuter, die wir auf dem Sediment beobachten können. Auch mikroskopische Ruderfußkrebse und Fadenwürmer aus dem Sediment tragen zur Diversität bei, genau wie Borstenwürmer, Asseln, Moostierchen und viele weitere Tiergruppen. Schließlich ist es wichtig zu wissen, wie das Leben in der Tiefsee funktioniert,
bevor es durch den Abbau der Manganknollen beeinflusst und gestört wird. Zu diesem Thema arbeiten am Deutschen Zentrum für Marine Biodiversitätsforschung im Moment mehrere Wissenschaftler, unter anderem in den Projekten JPIOceans und MANGAN.

Der Abbau von Manganknollen wurde bereits mehrmals simuliert, um die Folgen für die Tiefseefauna abschätzen zu können. Wie sich herausstellte,
ist er für einige Tiergruppen verheerend: Sogar 26 Jahre nach einem solchen Experiment im französischen Lizenzgebiet waren die Anzahl und die Diversität der Fadenwürmer in der betroffenen Region noch stark vermindert. Selbst unsere eigenen Untersuchungen hinterlassen deutliche Spuren in der Tiefsee. Im Jahr 2015 wurden einige frühere Probennahmestellen mit einem Remotely Operated Vehicle – kurz: ROV – erneut angefahren. Hier war die Dichte von großen Organismen, wie Schlangensternen, Seegurken, Schwämmen und Korallen, in den Spuren der Epibenthos-Schlitten deutlich geringer als außerhalb der Spuren. Diese Ergebnisse sind alarmierend. Bereits so geringe Eingriffe wie die unserer Probenahmegeräte führen zu einer anhaltenden Störung der
Lebenswelt auf dem Meeresboden. Wir können nur erahnen, was ein großflächiger kommerzieller Abbau der Manganknollen für die Tiefsee
bedeuten würde. Denn dort finden wir eine gewaltige Biodiversität, von der wir bisher nur Bruchteile erfassen konnten. Und genau dieser Mangel an Wissen macht unsere Arbeit in der Tiefsee so wichtig.

Der Manganknollengürtel im Pazifik erstreckt sich zwischen Mexiko und Hawaii. Mittlerweile hat die Internationale Seeboden-Behörde (ISA) dort 16 Explorationsgebiete vergeben.

Einer seiner wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkte ist die Erforschung der Biodiversität in den vom Tiefseebergbau betroffenen Gebieten.

schreibt seit 2015 seine Doktorarbeit am DZMB über Meiofauna, speziell Copepoda, aus der Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ). In seiner Masterarbeit an der Carl-von-Ossietzky- Universität Oldenburg widmete er sich makrobenthischen Organismen der CCZ. Im Verlauf dieser Arbeiten nahm er bereits an drei Expeditionen in die CCZ teil.

Katja Uhlenkott
studierte Biologie an der Universität Oldenburg und nahm bereits während ihres Studiums an einer Expedition ins pazifische Manganknollengebiet teil. Seit 2016 arbeitet sie im Projekt MANGAN am Deutschen Zentrum für Marine Biodiversitätsforschung (DZMB). Dort untersucht sie die Meiofaunagemeinschaften im deutschen Lizenzgebiet zur Manganknollenexploration

Verbreitungsmodelle für die Tiefseefauna im Manganknollen-Gürtel in der Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ), Pazifik

Seit langem gibt es Überlegungen, in der Clarion Clipperton Bruchzone (CCZ) polymetallische Knollen abzubauen. Aufgrund der Tiefe von mehr als 4000 Metern und der Größe des möglichen Abbaugebiets, ist es schwierig die Tiefseefauna flächendeckend zu untersuchen. Insbesondere die Meiofauna lässt sich aufgrund der geringen Größe der Tiere und ihre hohe Individuenzahl im Sediment nur mit großem Aufwand untersuchen.
Deswegen verwenden wir das machine learning tool „random forest“ um Verbreitungsmodelle für verschiedene Taxa der Meiofauna zu berechnen. Gemeinsam mit der Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) erproben wir die Anwendbarkeit dieser Modelle sowohl direkt für die Untersuchung der Verbreitung der Meiofauna, als auch für die Auswahl aussagekräftiger Positionen zur Probennahme.
