Oases of the world at Senckenberg

“S-Oases” Photo Contest Winners


Oases are isolated vegetated areas, surrounded by drylands, having a (largely) persistent water supply, of natural or human origin and often with human presence, with a specific microclimate and vegetation structure which facilitates high biocultural diversity.

In the project „S-Oases: Senckenberg Oases database“, an open-access online database is being created to cover all oases in the world. Oases are considered unique and diverse ecosystems that are endangered by global climate change and changes in land use. The goal of the project is to delineate oases, study the biocultural diversity and allow every researcher to obtain information about these special ecosystems.

In order to raise awareness about the project and help the database grow, Senckenberg launched a Photo Contest in the following three categories:

  • Oases landscape photography
  • Human uses in/of oases
  • Biodiversity in/of oases

More than 80 photos and coordinates of more than 100 oases have been submitted. Selecting the best images was no easy task. Here are the top three winners in each category:
