"Jugend Forscht" - regional contest of the Rhine/Main area

"Jugend forscht" is a German youth science competition, which takes place every year. As a part of the SAW-project we cooperate with the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium in Bad Vilbel whose students will participate with their work, at the Rhine/Main area regional competition. Additionally, the project was financially supported by the Fraport AG.

The students (grades 8-12), are working in four different groups, on various mosquito topics in and around Bad Vilbel. They sampled different locations (in town or outside), different heights (1.5 m or 3 m above the ground) and different mosquito traps (EVS-trap, BG-Sentinel, ovitrap and gravitrap). The larvae, which hatch from the collected egg clutches of the ovi- and gravitraps can be fed with fish food until the metamorphosis to the adult stadium is induced.

CATCH AND DETERMINATION

For the young people, the catching season for mosquitoes began in mid-May. Depending on the weather, they caught every 14 days up to the end of September. Altogether, each group had 12 catches. Until its classification, the trapped animals were stored in a freezer. In the pictures below, you can see some of the students, traps and sampling areas.

Students of the Georg Büchner Gymnasium and their traps on different sampling sites. They tested various trap types and sampling heights. Picture 1 shows some students, who build up an EVS-trap. Common height 1.5 m or 3 m above the ground (picture 3 and 2). Ovitraps could also be used in different heights.

Shortly after the last catches in September, Dr. Christian Melaun and Antje Werblow visited the school to classify the animals together with the students.

   Bestimmungsübungen Zusammenfassung 1

The students of the Georg-Büchner Gymnasium classified the samples together with Dr. Christian Melaun or by themselves (picture 1 and 3).
To see the very fine and small structures, which are necessary for the determination, we used binoculars and microscopes (picture 2).
